Brazil’s Ambassador to the UN Tovar da Silva Nunes said Tuesday that the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration is concerned about human rights violations in Nicaragua. Da Silva Nunes said that Brazil makes itself viable to receive hundreds of Nicaraguans who have had their nationality removed in an address to officials at the 15th meeting of the 52nd Regular Session of the Human Rights Council. The Brazilian government follows events in Nicaragua with utmost attention and is concerned with the reports of serious human rights violations and restrictions on democratic space in that country, in particular summary executions, arbitrary detentions and torture of political dissidents, said Da Silva Nunes. He urged dialogue between different parties. Brazil stands ready to explore ways in which this situation can be constructively addressed in dialogue with the government of Nicaragua and all relevant actors, said Nunes. He went on to express concern about the recent removal of nationality, impacting hundreds of Nicaraguans. The Brazilian government also receives with extreme concern the decision of Nicaraguan authorities to determine the loss of nationality of more than 300 Nicaraguan citizens, he said. He said Brazil puts itself at the disposal of affected Nicaraguans in line with the country’s legislation. By reaffirming its humanitarian commitment to the protection of stateless persons and the reduction of statelessness, the Brazilian government makes itself available to welcome the people affected by this decision under the special statute provided for in the Brazilian migration law. Last week, Brazil did not sign a joint declaration inked by 55 countries to denounce events in Nicaragua, according to the Noticias UOL news outlet. A UN investigation found widespread human rights violations that amount to crimes against humanity are being committed against civilians by Nicaragua’s Government for political reasons.
