The Cabinet mourned on Saturday 04/02/2023 ex-Prime Minister Sherif Ismail who passed away earlier in the day.

Extending its deepest condolences to his family and friends, it said Egypt lost a man of fine mettle who has always been highly admired for his great sense of responsibility, honesty and loyalty.

Mourning the departed, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli said “Sherif Ismail will forever be remembered and much appreciated for all his merits and the great services he offered to the nation.”

“His dedication, sincerity and service to the homeland and support to it and to its people will never be forgotten,” he added.

The deceased was an Egyptian engineer who served as prime minister between 2015 and 2018. He was minister of petroleum and mineral resources from 2013 to 2015.

Sherif Ismail was born on 6 July 1955. He studied mechanical engineering at Ain Shams University and graduated in 1978.

He held managerial posts at state-run petrochemical and natural gas firms.

He served as the executive deputy chairman and then chairman of the Egyptian holding company for petrochemicals (ECHEM), which was established in 2002. Next he was named chairman of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS).

Then he worked as the managing director of the state-run oil holding company, Ganoub El Wadi Petroleum Holding Company (GANOPE) and became chairman of the company. He was appointed as minister of petroleum and mineral resources on 16 July 2013 as part of the interim cabinet led by Hazem el Beblawi.

Ismail was appointed as prime minister on 12 September 2015. On 5 June 2018, he submitted his resignation to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. However, he continued to served as prime minister in caretaker capacity. Two days after Ismail submitted his resignation, Sisi appointed Moustafa Madbouli, minister of housing and urban utilities, to succeed him as prime minister.

Following his departure as prime minister he was appointed to serve as a top aide to President Sisi.
