Egypt, Spain mull boosting transport cooperation

Transport Minister Kamel el Wazir met on Thursday 17/2/2022 with Spanish Ambassador to Egypt Ramón Gil-Casares for talks on boosting cooperation in the railway and metro transport domains.

 

In a statement, the Transport Ministry lauded deeply-rooted relations binding the two countries and their fruitful cooperation in different domains.

 

Wazir hoped of more cooperation projects with Spanish transport companies, saying Egypt has promising investment opportunities in this domain.

 

He referred to current successful cooperation projects with Spain, including updating the signaling system on many rail lines, including Cairo-Alexandria and Assiut-Naga Hammadi rail corridors.

 

The updated signaling system project is carried out by Thales company.

 

The minister also referred to the seven trains that will be delivered to Egypt by Spanish Talgo company, saying the first train will be shipped to Egypt within the coming period.

 

Talks also tackled contracts between Egypt and a consortium between Spain’s CAF and Japan’s Mitsubishi to upgrade 23 trains of Line 1 of Cairo Metro and rehabilitate trains of Line 2.

 

The agreements were signed at TransMEA 2021 conference and exhibition.

 

The minister underlined the importance of finalizing all procedures related to these projects to facilitate the movement of citizens and offer high-quality services to them.

 

The Spanish diplomat lauded progress achieved in the transport domain in Egypt, saying Spanish companies are looking forward to more cooperation with the Egyptian side.
