Environment Minister discusses COP27 arrangements with UN official

Minister of Environment Yassmine Fouad and Special Adviser and Assistant Secretary-General for Climate Action at the UN Selwin Hart probed Saturday technical support arrangements for the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the UNFCCC, Egypt will host in November.

During her meeting with the senior UN official, Fouad highlighted the importance of engaging all relevant parties in COP27 preparations, while adopting a collective commitment to ensuring a successful climate summit that reflects Egypt’s leading role in climate action at the regional as well as international levels.

She said that youth and private sector engagement would also add value to the global event; therefore, a study is in progress to set up a special platform tagged: “GREEN VENTURE” to give young people an opportunity to actively participate in the summit.

In addition, Egypt is about to launch a national dialogue on climate, to serve as a mechanism for increasing climate change awareness among all segments of the society, including children, youth, men of religion, opinion leaders, and politicians, Fouad pointed out.

Fouad also touched upon the efforts afoot to turn Sharm El Sheikh, the summit venue, into a green city by embracing sustainable transportation modes, obliging hotels and tourist establishments to obtain green certification, and requiring all diving centers to become ‘Green Fins’ members.

UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt Elena Panova and a Foreign Ministry representative attended the meeting.
