RAMALLAH: The European Union (EU) has expressed its strong disapproval of Israeli government’s decision to construct over 3,426 new colonial units in the West Bank colonies, which are considered illegal by international law.

This came in a statement that urged Israel to reverse these decisions, saying: ‘The EU reaffirms that the settlements are unlawful and undermine peace as they jeopardize the two-state solution. Furthermore, the settlement expansion is incompatible with the ongoing efforts to ease tensions, and this situation will affect the upcoming Ramadan, which is very significant before the religious festivals of Pesach and Easter.’

The statement also stressed that the EU’s stance remains the same: ‘We will not acknowledge any alterations to the pre-1967 borders, including Jerusalem, unless they are agreed by the parties.’
