FAO, Agriculture ministry organize FFS for people with speech impairment

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized a Farmer Field School (FFS) for people with speech and hearing impairments in El-Kharga Oasis.

Farmer Field School (FFS) is a participatory learning approach being used in a wide range of different contexts around the world. A FFS brings together a group of farmers, livestock herders or fisher folks, to learn on how to shift toward more sustainable production practices, according to FAO website.

The move came as part of proceedings implemented by the FAO in cooperation with the Desert Research Center as part of the Sustainable Management of Kharga Oasis Agro-Ecosystems in the New Valley Governorate.

The FAO provides technical support to implement this project, upon request from the Egyptian government, represented by the Agriculture Ministry in cooperation with the the Desert Research Center, said FAO Representative in Egypt Nasr el-Din Haj.

The project, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility, is meant to attain sustainable food production and provide diversified livelihood options, for the local communities and smallholders in El-Kharga Oasis, he added.
