Foreign ministry: Ethiopia’s unilateral decision to start operating GERD breach of its obligations

Ethiopia’s unilateral decision to start operating the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is considered a violation of the 2015 Declaration of Principles Agreement signed by Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, said the Foreign Ministry.

Commenting on Ethiopia’s announcement today to unilaterally start the GERD’s operation, the Foreign Ministry said, in a press release, that this decision constitutes a breach by Ethiopia of its obligations toward the Declaration of Principles Agreement signed by the Ethiopian prime minister, who earlier gave also a green light to take unilateral action to fill the reservoir in the first and second phases.

The GERD dam on the Blue Nile River began generating electricity for the first time on Sunday, according to Ethiopia’s state TV.

Cairo is keen to reach a legally binding agreement on the filling and operation of the GERD in the manner that causes no harm to the interests of Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan.

Egypt always does not oppose any development plans of any country of the Nile Basin provided that such projects cause no harm to the country’s water-linked rights.
