Egypt is an important partner to Germany, not only with regard to the Arab-Israeli conflict, but also many regional challenges, such as the crisis in Libya, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said.
The new government in Germany will maintain its efforts to promote peace and security in the region, believing that such goal is closely related to protecting human rights, Baerbock added in a statement posted on the German foreign ministry’s official Twitter account on Wednesday.
As the country is celebrating the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations with Egypt, Germany looks forward to building on this long-standing relationship to support Egypt’s efforts to increase civil societies’ engagement in the social and political arena, Baerbock said.
As for climate change, Baerbock said that she will invite Egypt, as the host of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) to the UNFCCC, to co-chair this year’s Petersberg Climate Dialogue with Germany in July.
Baerbock added that during her imminent Middle Eastern tour, she will explore further opportunities for cooperation on climate policies, energy, and protecting water as well as natural resources.
Commending the critical role played by Egypt and Jordan to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Baerbock said that during her tour, which will include Israel, she will emphasize that the future the Middle East peace process is Berlin’s top priority in the region.
Baerbock also reiterated Germany’s commitment to a negotiated two-state solution that leads to establishing an independent, democratic, contiguous, viable and sovereign Palestinian State.
The German foreign minister is set to pay her first visit to Egypt on Friday.
