The Palestinian administrative detainees in Israeli jails today decided to postpone an open-ended hunger strike that was supposed to start tomorrow, Sunday, after the Israel Prison Services (IPS) responded positively to some of the prisoners’ demands as dialogue continues on the remaining one, as announced by the Administrative Prisoners Committee. It said in a statement published by the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society that ‘following the latest dialogue session held last Wednesday between representatives of the prisoners’ movement and the IPS, and representatives the occupation authorities in charge of administrative detention; and after consultation with the Administrative Detainees Committee, it was decided to give an opportunity to complete the dialogue after responding to some of the demands and suspending responses to our basic demands until the next dialogue session early next month.’ Accordingly, added the statement, ‘We affirm the following: ‘First: This opportunity is the last chance to respond to our just demands. ‘Second: Our constant readiness and high preparedness is the guarantor for preserving our rights and the enemy’s response to all our demands. ‘Third: We call on our heroic people and all institutions supporting the cause of prisoners to continue in their role in supporting our right to wrest our freedom and end this unjust policy.’ More than 1080 Palestinians, including three women and 19 children who have been held without charge or trial under the Israeli policy of administrative detention, have decided to embark on a mass hunger strike to challenge this oppressive system and to demand justice. The hunger strike was supposed to begin on Sunday, 18 June.
