PM: ‘Ezbet Abu Qarn’ to be part of Fustat Gardens urban development project

The evacuation of ‘Ezbet Abu Qarn’, a shanty area in Old Cairo, and providing its dwellers with alternative housing is a dream came true, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said Saturday 08/01/2022.

This historic achievement has been realized after decades of futile attempts to evacuate this area, which is planned to be part of the ‘Fustat Gardens’ urban development project, the premier added.

Madbouli made the remarks, during a field tour to follow up the progress made in demolition activities and development work in the area.

Accompanied by a host of relevant officials, Madbouli toured the 28-feddan slum area after it had been totally evacuated and its residents – 4,700 households – had been relocated to alternative accommodation.

The area, which is bounded by some important landmarks and main roads, will be part of a major integrated urban development project envisioned to revive the first Islamic capital in Africa by preserving the Islamic architecture there and turning Fustat into an open museum to visitors from all over the world.

The gigantic project will also offer entertainment and cultural attractions in the heart of Cairo and its centuries-old historic districts.

Madbouli also toured ‘Amr Ibn Al-Aas Mosque Square’ development site, bordering the evacuated area to the north-east, to follow up the workflow of renovation and landscaping activities at the mosque square and surrounding areas.

Covering an area of 500 feddans in the heart of Historic Cairo, the Fustat Gardens national project is considered the largest of its kind across the Middle East.
