The Amman Criminal Magistrate Court’s division for cybercrimes has ruled on a case involving two individuals accused of disseminating false information online. This significant judgment comes on the heels of recent modifications to the nation’s cybercrime legislation, which now mandates stiffer penalties for the propagation of false news. The court confirmed the guilt of the two accused, a 49-year-old and a 20-year-old, both of whom are employed as drivers. They have been collectively fined 10,000 dinars, equating to 5,000 dinars each. The verdict can be challenged in a higher court. The Public Prosecution’s charges revolved around the duo’s distribution of misleading information related to earthquakes on the WhatsApp platform in September. Comprehensive investigations by the Cybercrime Unit substantiated these claims. According to Article 15/A of the Cybercrime Law No. (17) of 2023, any individual found guilty of intentionally transmitting or republishing misleading data that could threaten national security or disrupt societal peace, or malign any person, can face a minimum of three months in prison, a fine between 5,000 and 20,000 dinars, or both.
