DUBAI, 25th September, 2023 (WAM) — The German Embassy in the UAE and the Hydrogen Diplomacy Office Riyadh jointly organised a roundtable on tackling the GCC countries’ way to climate neutrality. The event took place last week in Dubai in the framework of the Traveling Exhibition on Germany’s Energy Transition, an initiative by the German Foreign Office, which aims at enhancing the energy dialogue among states world-wide, said a press release issued by the embassy. The central topic of the panel was dedicated to the GCC’s path towards climate-neutrality as a necessary contribution towards the 1.5C path agreed upon in Paris. In a short introduction, the German Embassy stressed the need to combine solutions to cope with the climate challenges ahead. Ayesha Al Suwaidi, Section Head Climate Change at the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, enlightened the audience with an input presentation on “Climate change vulnerabilities, present and future, the UAE facing in their fight against climate change and on the Abu Dha
bi’s climate Change strategy”.Based on these premises, panellists navigated through three key topics: net-zero targets, decarbonising energy systems and industries as well as the effects of decarbonisation on the labour market. All GCC countries have set themselves ambitious targets: from drastically decreasing carbon emissions to afforestation or boosting the use of renewables the to do list is all-embracing. In this vein, panellists agreed on a combination of solutions as a promising way forward. Indeed, by coupling relevant energy stakeholders’ existing knowledge, it is feasible to accelerate the transition pace. In that regard, Al Suwaidi aptly called for more multilateral stakeholders dialogue to further enhance the sharing and exchange of knowledge and technologies. Binsal Abdulkader
