Iran affirms Syria’s right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity

Iran has reiterated that the only solution to the crisis in Syria is by peaceful means in accordance with the principles of the international law and with full respect for its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that it has the right to defend itself in accordance with the law and the UN Charter.

In a session of UN Security Council on Syria held Wednesday, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Majid Takht Ravanchi, affirmed that the violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity continue through the occupation of parts of the country, the Israeli aggression and the terrorist attacks.

The Iranian diplomat added that Iran strongly condemns the repeated violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Takht Ravanchi underlined the need for the Security Council to explicitly condemn the Israeli aggression and the terrorist attacks on Syria.

Concerning the humanitarian assistance, the Iranian diplomat clarified that his country supports sending international assistance to Syria, provided that its sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected.

He added that the implementation of early recovery projects is a priority, and the unilateral coercive measures should not affect the implementation of developmental projects.

With regard to the work of the Committee of Discussing Constitution, Takht Ravanchi stressed the need for its work to be without external pressures, and for the role of the United Nations to be limited to facilitating this process, which must be managed by the Syrian people.
