Senate approves amendments to communications law of 2003

Meeting under speaker Abdel Wahab Abdel Razeq on Sunday 30/10/2022, the Senate approved a bill submitted by the government to amend some provisions of the communications law of 2003.

The Senate had referred the proposed amendments to a joint legislative and IT committee earlier this month to study them and write a report.

The amended law prohibits importing, manufacturing, assembling, possessing, using, operating or installing any communications equipment without authorization.

Under the amendments, those who fail to obtain necessary permits to import, manufacture, assemble or market any communications equipment should receive one to five-year jail terms and should be fined between two to five million pounds, or any of the two penalties.

Also those who possess, use, install or operate unauthorized communications devices will receive prison sentences and will be fined between 100,000 and 300,000 pounds, or any of the two penalties.
